Summer Greetings from Tay Knight

I got a text the other day that threw me for a loop. It was a blurry photo of a bunny with the caption “nine.” Now, I don’t know about you, but when I get a cryptic message like that, my curiosity goes into overdrive. Naturally, I shot back a “???” and eagerly awaited an explanation. Later that evening, the mystery of the fuzzy bunny photo was revealed.

It turns out that my friend and her husband decided to tackle a 5-mile hike. The hike was advertised as a beginner’s trail, with hikers being chauffeured to the start and then hiking back. It seemed like a pleasant way to spend the afternoon, so off they went. Here’s a dramatized version of what she told me:

“Tay, the scenery was stunning, and we were having a blast until we hit the 4 mile mark. That’s when the path started sloping upward. And not just a little incline, but a serious, ‘Who put this mountain here?’ kind of slope. After a few minutes of huffing and puffing, I realized our car was at the top of this ridiculous hill and I wasn’t sure I was going to make it up there. I even started plotting how to convince my husband to carry me the rest of the way.

As I was reviewing my options, I spotted a bunny hopping ahead of us. A few more steps and I saw another bunny. Distracting myself from the torturous uphill battle became a game of ‘Spot the Bunny.’ By the time I saw the glorious sight of the parking lot, I had counted seven more bunnies. So, naturally, I had to snap a photo of the last one and send it to you with the caption ‘nine.’ Because, apparently, bunnies are the ultimate motivational support when you’re dying on a hiking trail.”

As you are reading this letter, we are in the last quarter of our fiscal year and still have not reached our fundraising goal. And the amount feels a little bit like a “who put this mountain here?” kind of amount. Between now and September 30, we need to raise $180,000 dollars.

Your donations make up over 20% of our operating budget. That means that 20% of our client services, like safe shelter, crisis intervention, counseling, and advocacy, are funded by your generous donations. Every donation you can make, no matter the size, puts us one step closer to making our goal. And we have many ways that you can give, from one-time donations to our new Back to School text-to-give campaign that you can read about in this newsletter to our monthly giving program, “Ray of Sunshine.” You can find more information about how to give on our website at familysunshine.org/give.

As we push towards our fundraising goal, your support is more crucial than ever. Just as my friend found motivation in those bunnies on her hike, we find our strength in generous donors like you. Together, we can reach the top and ensure that all our programs and services remain available to those who need them most.

Thank you for being the beacon of hope and healing that guides us forward.
