Before we know it, the sound of school bells will fill the air again as students across the River Region gear up for another school year. That’s right, on August 10th, schools will open their doors, and while there’s still time to savor the joys of summer, now is a great time to consider how you can help the children in FSC’s counseling and shelter programs have a successful school year.
It’s no secret that the cost of school supplies can quickly add up for families. On average, school supplies can cost upwards of $100 per child for essential items like notebooks, pencils, backpacks, and more. And let’s not forget about uniforms! From elementary school to high school, the cost of outfitting a student in required clothing can range from $150 to $300. For families already struggling to make ends meet, there is often no funds left over for these school expenses.
It’s time for our annual back to school drives when we can come together as a community to provide these children with the uniforms and supplies they need to have a successful school year.
In our Back-to-School Supply Drive, backpacks will be filled with essential and grade appropriate school supplies. The complete supplies wish list can be found here. Monetary donations are also welcome.
The Adopt-A-Student Uniform Drive pair donors with students. Donors are provided with the student’s sizes and school colors and can purchase the uniforms themselves OR make a monetary donation and an FSC team member will do the shopping.
Don’t forget that Alabama’s tax-free weekend is July 21 – 23; a perfect time to purchase these needed supplies and uniforms and save money at the same time.
The drives continue through August 7th. Donations can be dropped off at our administrative offices at 858 South Court Street. For more information or to adopt a student, contact Jessica Witherspoon at jwitherspoon@familysunshine.org or 334-206-2131.
